Vendor Spotlight: American Leather®

American Leather® was founded 1990 by engineers who believed 12 weeks was too long to wait for a customized piece of furniture. From working in a borrowed facility, to working out of a 350,000-square-foot factory, American Leather® has always been focused on delivering quality custom furniture. They believe in innovation, style, and speed. Advanced engineering methods are used to quickly deliver long-lasting furniture.

Sustainability

American Leather® is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council, a nonprofit organization created to promote sustainable practices in the furniture industry, and committed to being environmentally friendly in their operations. Wooden frames are constructed and harvested from sustainable forests. They aim to create as little scrap as possible with their precision-engineering methods. Any scrap that remains is recycled or reused.

Eco-friendly Practices

Since April 2014, American Leather has exclusively used foam, leather, fabric, and Ultrasuede® that are free from fire retardants. Their furniture styles use soy-based BiOH® Polyols Renew™ foam cushioning that is fully recyclable. All leathers used are made with water-based pigments. Their innovative manufacturing techniques reduce the amount of leather scraps, and just like their wooden scraps, remaining leather scraps are either recycled or resold for the production of small leather goods. Energy is conserved in-house with automatic light shut-offs and employees being encouraged to recycle.

Innovation Done Right

American Leather® maintains U.S. manufacturing jobs with the establishment of their factory’s central U.S. location. With this, fast product delivery and a smaller carbon footprint is made possible. They bring forward both precise tailoring techniques and cutting-edge designs so quality and comfort is ensured. For this company, it’s not about profit. “It’s never been our focus to make a lot of money. It’s been our focus to do the right thing and the money takes care of itself,” says Bruce Birnbach, President and CEO, American Leather.
